Coed Varsity Track · Track and Field Wrap-up

End of the season…
Out of the whole track team, only 8 people qualified for the Sub-Sectional Race held at West Creek HS in Clarksville, TN. (Athletes had to meet a qualifying standard to even get into the meet, so that’s 1 reason why only a few made it).
The 8 athletes were:
Holden Shrum – long jump
Kennedy Hix – discus
Logan Malotte – discus and shotput
Stephen Lancaster – discus
Dillon McFerrin – discus
Elliott McGuire – 1600 m. run / 800 m. run
Taylor Ward – 1600 m. run / 800 m. run
Kylee Mendes (RBS) – 100 m. hurdles
It was a good way to end the season for these athletes. They went up against very solid competition. Most of everyone got close to their personal bests, which means they peaked at the end of the season, which is one of our goals.
Elliott McGuire and Taylor Ward did more than get close to their personal bests, they got new personal bests!
In the 1600 m. run Elliott McGuire dropped 13 seconds from his previous personal best and ran a time of 4:47. He got 6th overall.
In the 1600 m. run Taylor Ward dropped 9 seconds from her previous personal best and ran a time of 5:41. She got 4th and placed well enough to advance to Section Finals. (She was the only one to do this).
The Section Finals meet took place at Austin Peay on May 10th. Taylor Ward finished 8th in the 1600 m. run with a time of 5:51. She went out strong with the front pack but couldn’t hold on. She was competing against some very good competition.
Some highlights from this year’s track season:
Dillon McFerrin broke the school record in the discus. He threw 111’9″
Holden Shrum broke the school record in the long jump. He jumped 19′ 2.5″
Austin Robinson broke the school record in the 100 m. dash. He ran 11.44
The Girls Team finished 2nd at the competitive Dragon Invitational, hosted by York Institute in Jamestown, TN.
The Boys Team finished 2nd at the competitive Dragon Invitational, hosted by York Institute in Jamestown, TN.
Overall we had a good season. We went up against some good competition in each of our meets. I feel like we performed admirably. We saved our best performances for the end of the season, which is the goal for any team in any sport. We are young and inexperienced so our immaturity showed up at times but I feel like we matured towards the end of the season and did well. Some people made it further than what they did last  year. Some people got really close to making it further than what they did last year. I like the direction we’re heading. I feel like there is some promise to this group and we have a lot of momentum going into next season.
